A world leaderFounded in 1994, AXENT Technologies is one of the world's leading Internet security solution providers for e-business. Its software and hardware products protect computer networks, assess companies' vulnerabilities, and administer user logins and resources. Among companies in the Fortune 50, all but five use AXENT products every day. In fact, more than 5,000 companies and government agencies worldwide, including MCI, Mobil, and the U.S. Air Force, use AXENT products. Through its subsidiary, Secure Network Consulting (SNCi), AXENT offers on-site security consulting and assessment for clients, while AXENT Education Services provides training for IT professionals both on-site and at its facility in San Jose, CA. In April 1999, AXENT acquired fellow security solutions provider PassGo Technologies in a deal valued at approximately $50 million.
Kudos out the kazoo
The company's products have garnered an impressive number of industry awards. In 1999, AXENT'S Raptor Firewall won the Blue Ribbon Award from Network World, while PC Magazine gave AXENT's NetProwler and Intruder Alert its Editor's Choice Awards. And perhaps most prominently, for the second year in a row, AXENT made InternetWorld's list of the Top 50 Internet Companies.
A Wurzler of a deal
AXENT's newest version of the Raptor Firewall, for NT 6.5, received much praise for its easy installation and high-level security. In 2000, the company released its ServiceShield, a portfolio of security services for online businesses. ServiceShield provides 24-hour monitoring to detect unauthorized access and modifications; a vulnerability assessment; detection response management; and the option of complete outsourcing of the security infrastructure. In February 2000 AXENT teamed with JS Wurzler to offer e-businesses both security and insurance. Based on AXENT's determination of the security level of the company's web site, Wurzler decides what its premiums will be. At the end of May, the company announced a five year $20 million agreement in which XEROX's European arm will outsource security services to AXENT and SNCi. The deal was the highest grossing contract in the company's history.
Sold to Symantec
In July 2000 the company agreed to be purchased by fellow network-security software group Symantec Corporation for a $975 million stock deal, allowing Symantec to expand into large security business systems. The combined company expected to have $1 billion in revenues for the fiscal year ending March 2001.
